About Dr. Holtzen
Dr. R.F. John Holtzen is a highly skilled and compassionate oral surgeon with a passion for improving the lives of his patients. With a deep understanding of orofacial anatomy and a natural talent for visualizing complex structures, Dr. Holtzen found his calling in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
After completing his residency training, Dr. Holtzen co-founded Nevada Oral and Facial Surgery in 1999 alongside Dr. Brendan Johnson. Together, they built the practice into the premier Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Group in Nevada. In 2011, Dr. Holtzen and his wife made the decision to move to Montana, where he joined a practice in Missoula. In 2019, he took complete ownership of the practice, now known as Alpine Oral & Facial Surgery.
Dr. Holtzen considers himself blessed to have the opportunity to help others on a daily basis. However, it is the emotional aspect of caring for his patients that truly brings him joy. Recognizing that undergoing a surgical procedure can be a source of fear and anxiety for many, Dr. Holtzen and his team strive to create an experience that exceeds their patients' expectations.

Education & Residency
After completing his undergraduate studies at California State University, Chico, Dr. Holtzen earned his DMD degree from Temple University School of Dentistry. He then completed an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University Hospital. Dr. Holtzen completed two Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residencies at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis, MO, and MCP – Hahnemann University Hospital of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Holtzen is board-certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) and the National Board of Dental Anesthesiology (NBDA).
Hobbies & Interests
When Dr. Holtzen is not in the office, he cherishes precious moments with his loving family. He and his wife have two daughters, three sons, and one granddaughter. Living in the woods outside Hamilton, Dr. Holtzen's property is home to an array of animals, including horses, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, dogs, and cats. Much of their free time is dedicated to caring for these animals, riding horses, and tending to their needs.
