Surgical Tech Karl Williams Celebrates 10 Years at the Surgical Arts Centre

If you have had a procedure at the Surgical Arts Centre, chances are that Karl Williams helped you have a stellar experience. As lead scrub and surgical tech manager at the Surgical Arts Centre, Williams literally has a hand in most every operation at the facility, whether he is prepping rooms before surgery, assisting the surgeon during procedures, or guiding and training other surgical techs in their own work.

This summer marks Williams’ ten-year anniversary, both of working as a full-time surgical tech and of working at the Surgical Arts Centre. Williams completed an internship at SAC during his training at the University of Montana in 2005, in addition to working part-time at Community Medical Center. Upon graduation, the team at SAC asked Williams if he’d like to join them full time – and he happily accepted.

“I graduated on a Saturday and started my job that Monday,” said Williams.

Ten years later, Williams has been at the Surgical Arts Centre longer than almost anyone else. He is still hard at work helping the facility’s physicians in their work and helping patients receive the best-quality care possible, and he is still enjoying what he does.

“I like assisting with surgeries and I like the surgeries that we do,” he said. “I like the people I work with and I like staying busy.”

Before becoming a surgical tech, Williams was a member of the Air Force, a mechanic, and a long-haul truck driver. Currently, he lives in Missoula with his wife and two children. Outside of work, he also enjoys the art of fixing and maintaining a different set of delicate systems: he spends much of his time restoring old cars and participating in drag races. Right now he is in the process of restoring a 1966 Plymouth Barracuda – with the same concentration, thoroughness, and care that he puts into his job at SAC.

“Working here for the past 10 years has been gratifying. From the people I work with, to the community I live in, and the patients we help every day, it makes me proud to be part of such a wonderful team,” Williams said.

Williams is not the only one celebrating his anniversary. Dr. John Holtzen spoke for the physicians, nurses, and staff at the Surgical Arts Centre about Karl’s daily, vital contributions. “As a professional, Karl is exactly what every surgical tech should aspire to be but few accomplish,” he said. “He is an extension of the surgeons hands. Moreover, as a team member – Karl is family to each and every one of us!”
